Over the years, modifications compromised the integrity of the original 1946 design. The project restores the Quay Street façade to its historic form, using archival photographs and drawings to guide the reinstatement. These careful interventions return a sense of cohesion and authenticity to the building’s character.
The fourth-level remodel of the 1960s profile metal-clad extension is a subtle yet contemporary update. A darker, tonally varied plaster complements the original finish, while fine bronze detailing ties in with contemporary steel conservatories and mimics the building’s original rhythms, linking past and present.
With a strong focus on authenticity, the project minimises new construction while reversing unsympathetic alterations. By respecting and elevating the building’s historic form, the refurbishment ensures its continued relevance in a contemporary city while restoring its heritage value.
