This refurbishment reinstates key heritage elements lost over time to enhanceauthenticity, including the original ground-floor arch openings on BritomartPlace. A new enlarged façade opening references original window heights, providing amenity for the hospitality tenancy and connection with the street.Brickwork and decorative details were restored to enhance its character. A finecontemporary canopy replaces a non-original structure, sensitively placedbetween the building’s original façade mouldings, elevating the visibility ofthe historic façade while providing amenity.
Internally, the configuration allows for flexible commercial use while maintaining historic integrity. A new staircase was crafted from Jarrah bearers reclaimed from below the ground.
By balancing restoration with adaptation, this project ensures the long-term viability of a significant heritage structure, contributing to Britomart’s vibrant urban fabric that celebrates its past.
