The City Works Depot is an urban quarter covering almost four hectares on the western edge of Auckland’s CBD.
Emerging from the industrial remnants of the city’s old municipal works depot, it is a project of large-format urban reconfiguration and adaptive re-use by private enterprise. Big enough to span between the central city and its closest suburb, the City Works Depot reconfigured the way that Aucklanders navigated, used and imagined their city.
For over half a decade Cheshire Architects has master planned, designed and overseen construction projects covering the entirety of the site. Our work has spanned from macro considerations such as the establishment of tenant use mixes and site-wide vehicular circulation, to the intricate fit-out of salons, cafes and studio offices. From this we have helped the precinct’s owners shape a rich, dynamic mixed-use environment that is home to some of the city’s best loved institutions.
