To date a student accommodation block and science laboratory and academic office buildings have been completed and occupied. The final building in this stage of redevelopment is an interpretive centre, a building open to the many members of the public who visit the Goat Island Marine Reserve. Inside the building they will find exhibitions explaining the work of the institute and providing background information on the species found in New Zealand waters and the reserve in particular.
